Social Mosaic ~ Community House Values

Strong values in community build culture and respect. They set the foundations and pave the way for authentic connection.

I was asked to create seven art pieces for each value of the Social Mosaic Community House in Montreal, QC. The originals are now hung up on the walls of the house to remind its members and guests of what it means to be together in a good way ~ the way that aligns with the values they have chosen to live by.

Addressing the values in your own home can bridge connection, unlock new ways of communication and build a greater sense of belonging.

Open-mindedness

Practice non-judgement and encourage exploration

To open the mind is to expand our awareness of all things possible. How do we remain open to all perspectives? How do we push past the walls of our own biases? How do we stay out of judgement and turn to curiosity and exploration? How can this shift our lives from one of containment, to one of overflowing abundance and growth? Three eyes, like a kaleidoscope. Plants growing from our heads. A ceramic bowl of beaded succulents. Trusting in life. Open, open, open.

Active Listening

Seek first to understand then to be understood

Opening our ears and tuning in like a record player. At first glance, the record: simply a flat circle with rings and small scratches. It is when we place the small needle carefully, sit back and soak it all up that we finally are able to understand the beauty around us. Feeling into the spaces that are beyond words – deep and active listening.

Radical Candor

Proactively and compassionately give and receive honest feedback

To be truthful, authentic and open is not always easy. It takes courage. It takes acceptance of self and others. It ebbs and flows and it is necessary to live in a connected community. The flower in the centre of this piece ~ the blossom that arrives through radical, compassionate and honest communication.

Sacred Space

Treat the space with respect, keep it clean, and invest creative energy into making it feel like home

Homes are places of healing, gathering, nourishment, and growth. They offer integration. They offer creativity. They offer safety; opening up a well of depth into your own soul. The importance of making space sacred allows that depth to permeate through all aspects of your life.

Authentic, Creative Expression

Support the unique creativity and play of yourself and others

Let yourself go! Let yourself flow! Dance and move and shake and create. Open up your heart and support others to do the same. One of the best parts of life is expressing ourselves. Honour it.

Empathy

See things from other people’s perspectives, practice compassion

We are all one, yet unique in our expressions. Step into the shoes, eyes, and lives of others. Embrace their wild sides. Hold hands, give hugs, share smiles. Empathy makes this world go round. It is the greatest connector of all.

Personal Responsibility

Own your mistakes and proactively seek solutions, take responsibility for your own needs

You are in the drivers sit of your own life. Trust yourself. Take time. Take space. Make yourself tea. Have those baths, sit in meditation, practice self-care and self compassion. The most important relationship you will have in this lifetime is the one with yourself. Make it count!
